Digital Identity – Leaves Digital Footprints – Reveal your Sensitive Information

As we all know that in today’s cyber age our online identity refers to the digital Identity we create and maintain online, which includes the information we share, the activities we engage in, and the connections we make on the internet and so on.

In a way or another, Personal information is being used to identify an individual, such as their name, date of birth, any government issued ID, address, phone number, email address, financial information, login credentials etc.

And both together, our online identity and personal information create a digital footprint that can be traced back to us and reveal sensitive details about our lives and may harm us in many ways.

Hence, it’s an individual responsibility to Protect their online identity and personal information in order to safeguard our privacy, security, reputation, and financial wellbeing.

What could go wrong if our online identity and personal information is not considered/handled seriously or cautiously:

  • Identity theft: Our personal information, such as our name, address, and any Government issued ID, can be used to identify us and reveal sensitive details about our lives.
  • Security: Online security threats, such as phishing attacks, malware, and hacking, can compromise our Personal Information, leading to financial loss and identity theft.
  • Financial loss: Hackers can gain access to our financial accounts and steal money or use our credit card information to make unauthorized purchases.
  • Reputation damage: Our online identity can be tarnished if hackers gain access to our social media accounts, emails, or other online profiles and post false or embarrassing information.
  • Personal safety: Cyberstalks can use personal information to track and harass us, putting our safety at risk.
  • Legal and regulatory compliance: Many laws and regulations require organizations to protect personal information. If a company fails to protect your information and it is exposed, they may be liable for damages.
  • Trust: Not Protecting personal information could abolish trust with customers, employers, and other stakeholders who rely on our online identity and personal information.

Security Measures to protect our online identity and personal information

  • Use strong and unique passwords for all your online accounts and consider using a password manager to store them securely.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts that offer it.
  • Be cautious when sharing personal information online, especially on social media platforms.
  • Keep your operating system, software, and security tools up to date.
  • Use reputable security software and regularly scan your devices for malware.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities, like banking or shopping
  • Be mindful of phishing scams and always verify the sender and content of emails and messages.

By following these best practices, you can help protect your online identity and personal information from cyber threats.

We must take all precautionary steps to reduce the risk of becoming victims of cybercrime, financial loss, reputation damage, personal safety risks, and more and protect our online identity and personal information to safeguard our privacy, maintain our online security, protect our reputation, ensure legal compliance, and build trust with others.
